Description
Native to eastern North America, Lanceleaf Coreopsis has naturalized across much of the Prairies and even into the Rocky Mountains. It is a hardy perennial plant (Zones 3-10) that is both drought tolerant and able to endure high temperature and humidity. It will work in well drained containers and just about any garden soil, but it prefers well drained, nutrient-poor, sandy loam. This variety can reach 90cm (36") tall, but may grow shorter depending on exposure in the garden. It's stems are stiff and upright, so it makes a nice cut flower. It is attractive to a wide range of pollinators and beneficial insects.
Grown from flower seeds, it is a reliable perennial that has a long bloom season. Commonly called Lanceleaf Coreopsis, it is native to a large portion of the United States and is golden colored and a great performer. It can be used in many natural settings, beautification of fields, and in the flower garden as well. This clumping Coreopsis plant produces masses of 2 inch golden yellow, fringed blooms that have a reddish brown eye. The long, shiny lance-shaped leaves are nearly 4 inches long, and the foliage provides a wonderful back-drop for the lovely yellow blooms. Also known as Tickseed Coreopsis, it is tolerant of either moist or dry conditions.
It is recommended to deadhead to encourage continual bloom until the first frost. Coreopsis flowers will re-seed, so leave some spent flower heads if this is desired. Directly sow Coreopsis seeds outdoors in late fall into a prepared seed bed. Soil should be loosened and weed free. Press the flower seeds into the soil and lightly cover it. Keep the seed moist until germination. Tickseed Coreopsis care includes deadheading the spent flowers and dividing the clumps every 2 - 3 years.
