Growing:
This summer squash prefers humus-rich soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5, well-drained soil and Light: Squash thrives in full sun for 6 to 8 hours a day. Temperature of a cucumber can be 20 degrees cooler than the outside. Plant "Early Prolific Straightneck" squash seeds to a depth of 1 inch in a prepared garden bed, once all danger of frost has passed in your location and the soil temperature reaches at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the North Carolina State University Extension, summer squash does not germinate at soil temperatures below 60 degrees(15 C). Optimal germination occurs at 85 degrees (29 C). Space seeds 18-24 inches apart in rows spaced at the same distance. Alternatively, plant 3 to 4 seeds in hills spaced 48 inches apart. Cover the seeds with soil, and firm the soil down with your hands or the back of a garden hoe to remove air pockets. Water the newly planted squash seeds to moisten the soil to the depth of the seeds. Keep the soil slightly moist until seedlings emerge, in approximately 7 to 14 days. This speeds germination and provides seedlings with the moisture they need to thrive. Water once or twice a week to saturate the soil to the root level once seedlings emerge and plants begin to grow. The rate of growth of your "Early Prolific Straightneck" squash, the soil temperatures and drainage rate all affect the need for water. Water when the soil feels dry to the touch 1 inch below the surface. Mulch with a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch, such as hay or grass clippings, to create a weed barrier and to conserve moisture. Or weed around your straightneck summer squash by hand-pulling, using care not to disturb the roots of the squash.
Pulling weeds when they first emerge and their roots are small prevents disrupting the roots of your plants. Side-dress summer squash plants when they are 8 to 10 inches tall by sprinkling a thin band of high-nitrogen fertilizer along the row about 4 inches from the plants. Work the fertilizer into the soil with a garden hoe, using care not to contact plant parts or roots.
