Description:
Cut Flower Commonly known as golden columbine, canary columbine or southwestern yellow columbine, is a bushy, clump-forming perennial that typically grows to 1-3’ (less frequently to 4’) tall. It is native to canyons in damp places from western Texas, southern New Mexico, southern Utah, and Arizona south into northern Mexico (Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Nuevo Leon), with a disjunct population in southern Colorado (Colorado plants have shorter spurs and are sometimes called Aquilegia chrysantha var. rydbergii).
Aquilegia chrysantha, the golden columbine, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southwestern United States from extreme southern Utah to Texas and northwestern Mexico. The ferny leaves have three leaflets with three lobes and grow from the base and off the flowering stems Aquilegia chrysantha ‘Golden Queen’ is quite simply one of the most beautiful Aquilegias. With mounds of mid-green, maidenhair-like foliage and large, soft golden-yellow flowers. This superb and reliable Aquilegia variety makes an ideal cut flower. Excellent for rock gardens, perennial beds and borders, this easy to grow plant is adaptable to sun or part shade, in hotter areas it prefers at least a little protection in dappled sunlight. They are perfect for an informal or cottage garden environment. This is one plant that is guaranteed to create a stunning display.
In 2014 Aquilegia chrysantha ‘Yellow Queen’ was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit (AGM). Golden columbine is a loose grower, but usually does not need support if given regular moisture during the growing season. Genus name comes from the Latin word for eagle in reference to the flower’s five spurs which purportedly resemble an eagle’s talon. Specific epithet means with golden flowers.
Growing Yellow Queen: Sow Columbine flower seeds in starter trays indoor 6 - 8 weeks before last expected frost if starting this seed indoors. Press the flower seed into the soil but do not cover it. Light is beneficial to germination. Or, Columbine flower seed can be directly sown into prepared seed beds with loosened, weed free soil after frost season has passed. Sow the Columbine seed in groups of 3 - 4, and space the seed groups 16 inches apart. Thin to the strongest plant.
