Description:

This Coral Bells plant has lustrous, large, evergreen leaves of coppery purple that hold their color through the growing season. Late summer brings 3-foot-tall wands of tiny, bell-shaped, pinkish white blooms. It makes a lovely addition to the flower garden! One reason for the growing popularity of heucheras is their stunning array of leaf colors, shapes, sizes and textures. Alumroot is a clump-forming Missouri native perennial which occurs in somewhat dryish locations in rocky open woodlands and along ledges and crevices of bluffs.

It is a small evergreen perennial native to eastern and central North America in the Saxifrage family. This is Dale's Strain and it's every bit as attractive, but a new look for Heuchera, this variety grown from Heuchera seeds can grow in hot and humid summers. Heuchera do well in the southern states where the heat and humidity are intense. Gardeners are discovering a wave of new Heucheras bred from the native Heuchera Americana, renowned for its vigor and resistance to heat and humidity. Genus name honors Johann Heinrich von Heucher (1677-1747), physician, botanist and medicinal plant expert at Wittenberg University, Germany. Typically features a 12- to 15-inch-tall basal clump of heart-shaped, 5- to 7-lobed, long-petioled leaves (3-5" wide), which emerge flushed with purplish-brown and mature to a uniform green. Tiny, greenish-white, bell-shaped flowers in open, airy panicles are borne on slender, wiry stems extending well above the mound of leaves, typically to a height of 18-24" (infrequently to 3 feet) in late spring to early summer.

Growing Heuchera Americana: Many gardeners recommend that Heuchera seeds be stratified, which means that they must be refrigerated and put through a cold period lasting several weeks. Once the flower seed has been refrigerated for several weeks, it can be sown indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost. Using quality starter mix and starter trays, sow Coral Bells seeds into cells, pressing the flower seed into the soil. Keep Heuchera seed moist. When temperature are consistently warm outdoors and danger of frost has passed, young Heuchera seedlings can be hardened off moved outdoors.
