Leaves are oval, serrulate, pubescent, light to deep green, up to 3″ long. Salvia splendens also known as the tropical sage or scarlet sage is one of the most hardy flowers with bushy composition with upright growth and a different varieties of sizes. The foliage of the flower is dense with lance shaped spear headed blooms and leaves. The deep greyish green color of the foliage with scarlet red blooms gives an incessantly beautiful look to your gardens. The blossoms of the plant are fiery red in color with small two headed flower which grow up in progression along with the stem of the plant. Planting Instructions:
Sow in garden beds or containers in from early October to late November in narrow lines and cover with a layer of moist soil. The plant can tolerate partial shade but blooms well in full sun of 5 to 6 hours every day. Water only if the soil is getting too dry for seeds to germinate. Once the roots have established you can reduce the frequency of watering. Containers with good drainage are preferred since the extensive presence of moisture in the soil can dampen the plant. The flowers can also thrive after transplanting if the germinated plant is not too brittle.
Growing Requirements:
SOIL: The flower thrives in slightly acidic well drained soil with a pH ranging between 5.5 to 7. Preferred germination temperature is 21 to 24°C(70 to 75°F). Germination may take 20-25 days. SPOT: Pick a sunny spot for the plant for an all-around good growth of the plant. St John’s Fire flowers can tolerate moderate shade as well. TEMPERATURE: The preferred temperature for the plant should range between 21 to 24°C(70 to 75°F) WATERING: Water regularly until the seeds have germinated and reduce the frequency of watering once the plant roots have established. .
HOW TO HARVEST: Since scarlet sage blooms continuously during a rather warm weather. Cut the stem of the plant along with the foliage as an addition to your vases.
