Description:

This particular type of Pincushion Flower is a member of the Teasel family. It has big, slightly irregular ball shaped flowers in a full range of colours. Blooms are carried on long stems, making them suitable for cut flower arrangements. At 30 cm (12″) in height, the plants are useful in borders and mass planting. Occasionally this variety will self sow. Scabiosa will attract hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators to your garden. Scabiosa is sometimes listed as Sweet Scabious or Pincushion Flower.

It is easy to plant and grow Scabiosa seeds.

Latin Scabiosa atropurpurea

Exposure: Full sun Zone: 1-10

Timing:  Sow indoors 8 – 10 weeks before planting out. Sow outdoors in early spring, when a risk of light frost is still possible. In mild winter areas, seeds can be sown in the fall. Starting Barely cover the small seeds. Space plants 30-45cm (8-12″) apart. Growing Deadhead regularly. Grow in average, humus-rich well drained soil with pH in the 7.0 to 8.0 range. Cut back to the ground in autumn. Divide the plants every 3-4 years or they fade after that point.

Growing: Summary Sow seed directly outdoors for best results. Select a sunny site with well-drained soil. Barely cover seed with soil and keep moist through the 10-14 day germination period. Thin the seedlings to 30 cm (12″) apart when the plants are 5 cm (2″) tall.
