Wild Petunia is an attractive flowering annual, that develops 1 to 2 inch, magenta colored flowers. It's trumpet shaped blooms reside at the top of attractive green foliage, which grows to a mature height of about 10 to 14 inches tall. Wild Petunia originates in South America and is the parent of many hybrid varieties available today. It is known to attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, honeybees & hummingbirds as well.- A native to South America, this variety is one of the parents to all hybrid Petunias. Categorized as an annual flowering plant in the North and a tender perennial in the south, Wild Petunia will grow quickly from seed in a single season. The plants bloom profusely, later wilting with the first killing frost. These plants are known to readily self seed at the end of the season, dropping it's seed to the bare ground beneath, for fresh plant life to reemerge the following Spring. Chemical investigations have been unable to determine it's active principle. Novel diterpenes were found in the closely related Petunia patagonica and several ketones are known to occur in the genus. Less than 7 hours of sun each day will produce spindly plants with few blooms. Wild Petunia does not have a rigid, upright habit but rather a relaxed and sprawling habit.
